FUTURE HERITAGE
We took our motto literally once again in 2025: we opened doors. Doors to a wide variety of buildings in Essen – to well-known and hidden places, to stories and perspectives. During the festival weekend, everyone was invited to join us, step inside, gather impressions, and rediscover Essen. Whether architecture enthusiasts or simply curious neighbors – everyone could experience how a city grows, transforms, and the people who shape it.
Our theme this year was “Future Heritage.” Together, we explored which buildings and spaces might become our future architectural heritage – from historic structures to innovative projects. What is worth preserving, what needs to change, and how can we create a livable and fair future? Through tours, talks, and encounters, it became clear that Future Heritage is about more than architecture: it’s a reflection on our attitudes toward issues such as climate change, democracy, urbanization, and inclusion. Together with our visitors, we opened up perspectives on the heritage of tomorrow – open-minded, curious, and full of ideas.
