A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES
On October 7 and 8, 2023, we opened the doors to Essen’s diverse architecture for the third time. Under the motto “Discover Your City,” we invited everyone to experience both familiar and hidden places from entirely new perspectives – from historic industrial sites to modern workspaces and living environments.
A total of 19 buildings took part, many of which are usually not open to the public. Our visitors were able to take a look behind the scenes of a long-standing printing company, explore former industrial halls, or rediscover sacred spaces. The focus was not only on the buildings themselves but also on the people and stories that shape them.
As in previous years, our goal was to show that architecture is far more than just the art of building – it is part of urban life; it connects, inspires, and invites reflection. Together with our hosts, partners, and all visitors, we engaged in conversations about urban development, sustainability, and social change – and once again felt how vibrant and adaptable our city truly is.
